Young Leaders is a programme for young people who wish to develop their leadership and facilitation skills – open to anyone over 16, based at our 18th Century farm steading in the Pentland Hills.
Overview
The Young leaders programme is for participants who have worked with Youth Vision on other programmes to progress to the next stage. The Young Leaders programme is aimed at developing leadership skills in Youth Vision project participants aged 16+ to begin to take on a more active role in leading and delivering sessions to the younger participants. There are 3 levels / tiers to the program.
Aims
The programme aims to support and encourage young people to engage in training and develop new skills to support moving on to sustainable positive destinations:
- Working alongside Youth Vision staff in a support role with more responsibility.
- Being empowered and playing an active role in planning and managing projects.
- Planning, risk assessing, teaching skills and leading group activities.
- Mentoring and acting as role models for younger participants.
- Planning, preparing for and running community events.
Weekly sessions
Running parallel to our other groups, Young People can attend any of our groups and become Young Leader within them. Most Young Leaders start with our Saturday Wilderness Group before progressing onto other days of the week. Food and drinks provided, along with any additional clothing as required for specific activities e.g. walking boots, waterproofs.
Monitoring
Progression is tracked 3 monthly through SMART goal setting and 1:1 support, with supervision offered to Young Leaders as part of the programme by staff and volunteers.
Awards and accreditations
Whilst completing the Youth Vision Circle of Life sessions, young people will also be able to attain:
- Youth Vision Young Leaders Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards – accredited SCQF level 3,4 & 5
- John Muir Award – Discovery, Explore and Conserve levels.
- Duke of Edinburgh Award – Bronze & Silver – support to complete all sections of the award
Next Steps
We will provide support in applying for college or going onto employment. Young People are also eligible to attend our Friday Community Gardening group to gain work experience.
